Retreat and unwind on this idyllic 17-acre farm and animal sanctuary in the Black Mountains, only 7 miles from the literary haven of Hay-on-Wye. Just north of the Brecon Beacons National Park, you can spend carefree days wandering along leafy footpaths or even hike up to the highest mountain range in South Wales, Pen-y-Fan. Frontier Cabin is nestled in the trees and offers wild swimming, donkey treks and superb stargazing under the dark clear skies.

Why we love it:There's a resident horse whisperer on-site, and the owners offer private donkey picnics in the woods - cute!

Home bods after a more laid-back forest break can simply relax on the terrace and watch as red deer, peregrine falcons, foxes and badgers come out to play at dawn and dusk.

Why we love it: The sweet little summer house at the end of the garden is the ideal spot to relax with a favourite book.

Back at Bo-peep, swing gently on the tree hammock on sunny days and cosy up next to the roaring wood burner on crisp winter evenings. The hut's fresh contemporary interior and cool tones make this little piece of paradise a must-visit.

Why we love it: A fire pit where you can toast marshmallows while gazing up at the sparkling stars is the icing on the cake.
